Medium term vision of urbanization processes and regional development management

The analytical review focuses on assisting the government of Uzbekistan in its urbanization and rural development initiative. The review analyzes the current rural development program, and its main challeneges, as well as stresses that due to the reduced employment opportunities in the rural areas stimulating labor migration, both external and within the country, especially the flow of labor force from rural areas to the cities, the structural reforms in the agricultural sector, and dynamic rural population growth in Uzbekistan, there is a need to pursue a comprehensive long-term urbanization policy. Considering that roughly 80% of economic growth is generated in urban areas, sustainable economic growth will require transition towards innovation based industrial development, and heavy urbanization.
