National Food Security Agenda
Research areas: Trade and Industrial Policy
Duration: December 2008 - December 2011
The Global Food Crisis of 2007 made it clear that the problems of national food policy and sustaining food security require a more careful study. Moreover, most analysts tend to think that in 2008 the food crisis temporarily “fell back into the shadow” due to an even more powerful Financial Crisis and a subsequent decrease in world solvent demand. Therefore, creation of an effective national policy is deemed important since the Global Food Crisis has demonstrated the urge for a careful and comprehensive analysis of national food policy, and the need to sustain food security. It is possible to conclude that another cycle of food crisis can emerge, following the current financial crisis. Hence, the current “respite” should be used as an opportunity to develop and implement a solid national food policy.
The research project focuses on formulating the concept of national policy on sustainable agriculture, food security and nutrition. The policy will aim at creating conditions for balanced nutrition of the population which is a vital prerequisite for population’s health and physical and intellectual development of the nation. The concept is being developed within the three main directions: (i) providing knowledge on healthy and safe nutrition and rational nutrition norms; (ii) ensuring accessibility of food products in accordance with the principles of rational nutrition norms; (iii) creating an effective legal framework for observance of norms, standards and quality of food products.
